Just a thought…

You know how back in the days where everyone here is looking to the west, seeing it as the ultimate destination for everything – business, vacation, culture etc. And we silly Asians started adapting the weirdest things like fur coat in Asia (what the hell for?) and cowboy themed parties and everyone go Goo Goo Gaa Gaa about boot cut jeans and walking around with a boom box on their shoulder...

Then Asia boomed with Japan leading it with state of the art technology. And then suddenly it is okay to dress in neon colors and the skimpier the sexier… They even made Anime Convention sexy!

The whole world embraced it. Top trading around the world includes Japanese cars and parts, Sony!, Japanese Anime and not to forget porn… You even see bits and pieces of Japanese pop culture here and there around the world….which bring me to this question.

Today, with the fall of Europe and The States just surviving after its crisis…. All eyes are on the hardly have eyes people – China!

Do you think the world will embrace China’s culture like how they did Japanese? They are the most typical man on earth today...as portrayed by Nat Geo (Video is linked to image)

Imagine this. People across the globe glued to TV watching what USED to be American Idol and vote for something like this….

Not so much isn’t it? Now, here’s another food for thought….

Blog....such wonderful dying trend! But who the hell cares. Personal blogs kan untuk diri sendiri. =p

I just wanna say something about what has been happening here in Malaysia recently...and it is something particularly close to me. Animal abuse has been on the rise these days. It all started with the horrid video of the poodle who are beaten up because she can't stand on her hind legs for long... that sparked a nationwide hunt for this girl where everyone know by name and her 'boyfriend'. No, despite the outrage and countless hate pages on FB, they fail to locate the girl and the unidentified male in the video and like everything else, the news just went under the radar.

But that didn't stop there. Not too long after this video surfaced on almost all social networking sites - Tomboy killing kitten for shear joy/pleasure. In this case, the somehow manage to get the girl, or rather she surrendered to the police station wetting her panties claiming harassment.

That made it to front page news. Headline reads "Tomboy girl was stressed with parent's divorce" Gosh, can anyone be lamer. 3 things crossed my mind;

#1 No you will not be forgiven just because you came forward
#2 Why on earth do you have to blame it on your parents if you can't bloody handle stress. I bet your parents didn't teach you to de-stress by torturing animals do they?
#3 Oh Lord, she only need to pay RM100 for that crime??

That is like 1/3 of a speeding ticket! So if I am stress or I am some kind of sicko who wants to experience 'killing' all I have to do is - just do it and pay RM200 max? I might as well make a business out of it then? It is a niche market after all isn't it? Seriously, someone HAS to do something about the laws here. The serious ones get away with minimal fine and the less serious one has to go for months of religious school? You kidding me? Here's another thing for you to digest - if you abuse or accidentally killed a cat - you get a RM200 fine, but if it is a dog, you get a RM100 fine. How fair is that? And to think which multiply faster?

Here's a quote from Datuk Haji Mohd Radzuan Malik statement;
"What is perceived to be cruel in the eyes of the public is not necessary so in the eyes of the law"

This is just one of the many examples of the rather imbalance country we live in.
BOTTOM LINE is.....the country just need to get their priorities right!

And the politicians keep wondering why the dropout rates of graduates working within the country is so high. Maybe because although under the radar, discrimination/bias is still apparent and some long battled rights are still not justified? Ever thought about it?

Yes Yes! I know…After a long thought I think it is more feasible (if I want to keep this blog alive) if I just use it as a platform to share, bitch and comment about random things rather than blogging-blogging per se (crowd in the head goes YAY!)

Now, I know I have been blogging about Gaga recently but hey, good thing is I am not really bitching about her. I even have a confession! I listen to her sometimes when I jog. I admit I do love her songs. Perhaps she might have incorporated some voodoo charm into her lyrics or music because every time there is a new singles from her, the tune seem to be stuck in my head for a while…

I was reading about how the music video industry has been slowing down and the quality of music videos are getting bad to worst due to budget constraints mainly because labels are cutting cost on MVs and allocating almost all of its budget on live tours instead which is understandable. Piracy is on the highs and people in general do not watch MVs like how they used to anymore. Even searching for the original one online can prove to be quite a task because video hosting sites are filled with cover versions and spoofs. Having your original MV listed on top can be very pricey as well….

If you turn back time, a decade of so…it was a completely different scene from today. Fans wait anxiously for their idol’s MV and spread them like wildfire.

My point is… It’s not true anymore! Thanks to Lady Gaga. Today, waiting for Lady Gaga’s next music video is like waiting for a block buster movie to release. Bigger than Inception’s anticipation really. Lady Gaga never fail to impress the audience with her rather twisted antics (which is what everyone fell for in the first place) and she always escalate it further and further. I bet you have seen the latest MV from her, or should I say a blockbuster in the MV world…

She has gotten so big, even big brands like MAC is willing to change the tone and manner of the brand and put in a gist of Gaga in their latest commercial…

Maybe all the celebrity endorsed commercials are meant to be twisted…or is it just me?

That wasn’t too long ago (or so I would like to think) But we all know who to thank for the dying tradition of blogging. Nope. Not exactly sugar coated but I suppose as life goes on, people move on too. But it kinda sadden me to see that out of few hundred ‘friends’ in my Facebook Friend list – only a quarter or so you interact with today.

Anyhoo...The past few weeks, work has been craaziieee! and there were some extended family drama which I am not suppose to disclose here but some might already know *Shhh* :p

Me being busy and all kinda rope me off my social life. Sad to say, I don’t have much of a social life anymore. I suppose after saying NO a little too many times, people just give up calling or assume you’re busy. Yes, I have demoted to the bottom rank of the social chain. I don’t even hang out at Putrajaya anymore with my hommies, the drinking session has came down to almost zero…I think Jon is facing the same thing too. That poor boy over work la…

Sometimes there are soo many things that I want to blog about, but when it comes to penning it down - I just get constipated. But....

I am angry and frustrated.

I hate seeing others being taken advantage of.

I don't like it when people say one and do the other.

Whatever happen to honestly.

I hate it when people do not greet back.

I don't like it when people do not listen.

So yes, I have no been blogging as often as I promised. Its only Q2 now….still atleast. Mua still have like another half year to blog :p

Life has been aight I suppose. My personal life has been a roller coaster ride this year and it is a lot to blog about so I’ll save it for the next… but work has been awesome!!! I don’t rant about it now. I guess I’m happier in a way … no regrets making the switch despite the hesitance at first. I guess I’m just running against time and worry too much about wasting yet another year to find out what I really really want to do…. (except for being a Lawyer that is) but I have to say, strategic planning has way exceeded my expectation. I have learnt so much about advertising as an industry and business itself, learnt about my clients, hell…I learn a lot about myself too.

This is random but significant change in music. I know I know….all I do is kutuk Ashley’s idol but I can’t help it. Im sorry…Today I was just browsing through Youtube and found Queen’s I want t break free – funny how music video revolution goes...

There are lots of Gaga news out there these days, I’m sure that makes Ashley very proud.

When I first came across the Hey Ey Ey song, I had no idea it was from a weird freak who name herself after Queen’s hit Radio Gaga, but I kinda like the song and soon, I too became a fan! But the stations overplayed it as usual and made me kind of sick. But that aside, Lady Gaga has become a phenomenon! She is everywhere from MTVs to Interview with the freaks and constantly appear on Fashion Disaster column thanks to her “distinctive” fashion taste. I think it is safe to say that I am overfed with Gaga and I believe I speak for others on the same boat - the world is getting tired of her.

And since we are on the same context, I notice MTV is slowly becoming more of an AXN channel filled with celeb related reality shows, and I believe from what I have gathered, they made a conscious decision to decrease if not slowly fade off music videos. This kind of brings me back to the Gaga Syndrome that everyone has now. (I just found out that she is actually an anak orang berada – hey, money really can’t buy you fame aight?) Because airtime is limited, musicians has raised the bar on music video production and in my honest and humble opinion, no one has raised the bar higher than Lady Gaga herself. Making music videos are not cheap especially when it is so competitive. If you haven’t seen her latest ~~porn episode~~, opps! sorry, I meant music video Telephone which is kind of like soft porn anyways, please go check it out. *This is the full uncensored version, a dreadful 9 mins long porno teaser*

I have to give it to her despite the fact that she’s weird and all - she sure knows how to make EVEN more money. Her Telephone video is filled with product placement. I guess that is how she funded the music video. If the Poloroid placement was not obvious, you would be blind to miss Virgin Mobile’s too – unless of course you are blinded by the nakedness, which I do not blame you.

All I am saying is, product placements in music videos sucks. And if it continuous, in a rather obvious way, will surely destroy the advertising AND entertainment industry. Brands really shouldn’t be too desperate. If so, the next music video you will bear the logo on Lady Gaga’s head instead of a telephone hairstyle

On a completely different but somewhat related topic, one anti piracy org did a really cool campaign banking on Lady Gaga too. They made a voodoo out of her….which comes as no surprise =p

I know it’s not actually very me to blog about choices and life (Yes, yes – I’ve established long time ago this blog is mainly for rantings). But in continuation of the earlier post……..

I was browsing through the net and came across this really nice verse;

Sometimes, I wonder how people invented words. They made words like “Aequeosalinocalcalinoceraceoaluminosocupreovitriolic” which technically only used to describe spas so complicated…and then decide to leave the most difficult task one have to do with a simple term like “CHOICE” - it sounded almost like JOY too, only in reality - the opposite!

People hate making decisions/ choices. I personally hate them. If I had to choose, I will just live on a straight road, highway to heaven or hell (we will leave that to the big guy)

The truth is, as simple or easy choices or decisions may be, it is what make you – slowly framing memories of your past and molding your future.

I have taken a step back and reevaluate the choices I have personally made in life….. and if I had to take a test – will would have failed miserably!

· Smoking in high school, mixing with the wrong group

· Playing truant, School fights, Plagiarism

· Screwing up the scholarship speech

· Taking up Mass Comm

· Saying no to a bf of 3 years simply because I blurted it

· Not telling grandparents how much they meant to me

· Leaving my very first agency who taught me to love the industry

· Rejecting Berjaya University offer – my then only chance to join corporate

· Accidentally fell into events

· Leaving an awesome account in Grey

· Being a planner

We are all guilty of making bad choices. Do I regret any of it? I’ll b e lying if I say no to all.

It’s true I make helluva bad decisions at given time. I say the darnest things at the worst timing. People who knew me forgives, the ones that don’t take to heart and I am left helpless…. Although masked well, it is still not exactly the best feeling…..

They say life is beautiful, but then they also said Life if what you make out of it.

See the word YOU in there? The owners is on YOU….so if you think your life sucks now, perhaps you should start thinking before you make those small little choices…. It all adds up!

Or else, you wake up one day too late to realize it

I think the way they did it was kinda cool - depicting around the idea of men are generally dirty and women/housewives are running out of cleaning solutions. What better way to portray men than to associate them with “balls”?

The Love for Dogs

Lately I have been thinking a lot about things, it’s like I am having some kind of realization. No the world is not coming to an end. But what’s different about the world today is how I see it now as oppose to how I see it then. It is as though mother earth and I are connected somehow or other through an unsound channel. I don’t exactly know how to explain it in words, but it’s just the feeling. I believe it is in each and every one of us – a calling.

I believe as we grow older (and hopefully wiser) we think less of ourselves and more about people and things that surround our lives. Each one of us individuals has a passion for something. I think my calling is to help animals. I’ve always loved animals, big or small, fins or skin…

Hell – I ride on them.....

Feed them

Pat them

Take pictures WITH them

Take pictures OF them

And sometimes…I even behave like ‘em!! Oh wait.....that's the bf!

But there is one animal that I hold very close to my heart. =)

The furry 4 legged. No…not cats! I don’t really fancy them, plus they have 9 lives, so if they ran out of them – I’d say they had a good run. This entry is dedicated to all the stray dogs out there and people who have contributed to making a dog’s world a better place.

Yes, it is an eye sore to see strays. We do not like them when they come close to us when we are eating now, we do not like to see them in our neighborhood, he hate the sounds they make at night….hell, we even hate the sight of them dead on the highway. The question is, if we hate seeing them everywhere, where else can they go to?

They too were given a life to live. It’s sad enough that they have to make it in this cruel world all on their own. Not to mention in a country like Malaysia where dogs are considered non-halal, and the fact that dog meat trade is getting bigger and bigger not only in China, but also Rusia (I think it’s the results of Rusian marrying Chinese immigrants from the damn border – they don’t make very cute kids you know?)

It’s a pity that we see so little of them and yet, they think so highly of us. Dogs are intuitively trustworthy animals and are considered the most loyal amongst all. Sure, draw them with food and then make food and money out of them.

Just a few months ago, I passed by a pet shop and I saw a poor looking young cocker spaniel. He has such sad eyes and was just skin and bones. No, he was not starved nor abused – but he is a product of mutation.

Dog breeders these days do not share the common goal of the olden days breeders. Dog breeders came up with the idea of breeding dogs so children of the future – us – live to see an authentic breed of dogs and be blown away by each breed’s characteristic and behavior. But dog breeders today are all out for $$ and only $$, so they think of the cheapest and easiest alternative. Consider it trade dog prostitution. Mama dog forced to mate with her own pups, and siblings and well, you get the picture. Because it is not a natural thing for 4 legged to be forced to do what used to be nature calling, their babies result in sad pictures like the above.

The question is, what are we doing about it? Are you just going to agree what a sad world it is to be a dog and do nothing about it or are you going to go out there and do something about it. If you think about it, there are so much we can do. Save a stray, make them your house guard. Give them food if they come to your table. Try aid a wounded dog if not too aggressive. Volunteer in dog shelters on your free time. If you do not have free time, contribute via food or cash. Give out your used clothes or old shoes. You’d be surprised how happy a four legged will be to have one side of your shoe as toy. If you can’t help, go tell a friend who tell another friend who may be able to help.

I met a very nice lady recently. She has been volunteering in dog shelters around Klang Valley for the past 15 years. She said

“The world may not change if you help save a dog, but the world will surely change for that one dog”

and I can’t help but to agree with her….

Spirit of the Lurve Month

I think the world is running out of love this month of the year because typical madly in love couples are going all out proclaiming their love for one another.

And I am guilty as charged =(

Because it’s that time of the year where everyone gets all lovey dovey about this funny little thing call LOVE – I reckon I should blog about him. No, not many people know him or know of him until recently (thanks to FB - beats all conventional methods)

In a way I am thankful if not grateful to have found someone who makes me laugh and feel good about myself no matter how horrid the situation or feeling may be. He is the one person who truly embraces all that I am – good or bad. (we all know which weighs more)

This is soo going to make me look like fool but I'm blogging either way - all in the spirit of Valentine!

I love it when he is all goofy and funny but absolutely hate it when he mumbles,

I love how he pats my stomach when I am having a headache

And how he eats my leftovers like it’s a brand new dish

I love the way he makes those squeezy face - I swear I see an angel sometimes

I guess in another word, I just like how my world go round now that he came in =)

Twisted Kid

The other day - Jon, Matt and myself were in SS2 to pay our phone bills when we came across this small Chinese boy – not more than 8 years of age.

He was alone, outside the closed DiGi center – very clean innocent looking boy, sitting around on the security roller chair. He had in hand….a small bird. (Not, not his twinnie, a REAL bird)

It was a disturbing sight, but what he did was even more disturbing.

He not only placed the birdie on the chair and started poking it with his index finger, he was also tapping/short throwing it like a ball on his palm. Get this – the bird was alive! It just couldn’t fly because it has its tail cut off (birds without tail can’t fly btw) When he realized that we were talking about him, he took the tortured birdie on his palm, hand extended in front, and walked towards us. It was like REAL TIME HORROR MOVIE SCENE. Not kidding, it was rather scary to ME at least.

Jon scolded him and told him to put the bird away when he marched towards us, he kept quiet and turned back, but he had a “smile” on his face. He then went over to the curb behind the wall, extended his hand with the birdie where I can see it, and started squeezing it. I swear I’m not kidding.

The only thing that crossed my mind at that time was.... “Oh damn, he is going to grow up to be a very dark and twisted boy who finds pleasure in torturing others” or he is going to end up as a pedophile.

I mean, what the hell was he thinking? Where on earth were his parents? I am just ultra pissed just knowing that I could have done something, but instead I walked away – knowing that I contributed to the tortured birdie’s death…..and that sucks!

A New Begining

I wanted to post this entry earlier…when everyone is busy blogging about their New Year and stuff. But for me, New Year starts TODAY – Feb 1^st, 2010.

Why? Because today, I am going to leave behind all the sucky experience I had in the past year, and take on a new challenge in life.

Today, I’m starting a new job in a non WPP agency.

Today, I am no longer in account management.

Today onwards, I will be in planning instead *smile*

Hell, it is nerve wrecking to know that I am already 3 years into advertising, and taking a new role in planning without any experience whatsoever IS a high risk if it does not turn out well. It’s going to be really tough, adding to the fact that it’s a 2-man show (my boss and me) … but I am optimistic. I know I can do it if I strive hard enough.

2010 is going to be a good year, I’m positive =)

But that doesn’t make my 2009 a horrible year either. It has however, been a roller coaster ride for me. My first quarter of 2009 was definitely the highlight.

I was promoted to be a Jr. Events Manager after 4 months in Nasty Inc. Although I complain and whine a lot about sharing my workplace with 12 stinky dogs, I truly enjoyed it. (and it pays well too) I had a boss who supports me – the type that you can call when you’re pissed drunk in some night club and she will come in no time to bring you home.

I can proudly say that I helped organized the coolest parties in the Hitz world in Penang and KL.

......and also launched the most talked about technology in Malaysia at that time. MNP – in which Maxis won over DiGi by miles. Roving in huge trucks really helped with acquisition, and within few months, Maxis market share larger than ever.Then there was the iphone launch in Malaysia

The clients may not be the easiest to work with, but they show their appreciation and that is what counts

Other highlights in 2009 includes;

In April, I went to Jogjakarta and Bali together with Kuan Mei, Kean Shiong, Simpson and Livan….

In Bali, I finally bungy jumped - the legal way.

(The one in Phuket doesn’t count because it’s not certified)

The wedding bells were ringing in 2009 too. First in line was Darshini & Nick! They are like the cutest couple ever. Nick was soo lost in the wedding, and Darshini stole the limelight cos she was just soooooo pretty!!

The other wedding that brought tears to my eyes were Kuan Mei & Melvin’s wedding, mainly because I was there throughout their courtship, through engagement and now, marriage. They have always been someone I could always count on too.

Life has been good…for the first 3 quarter at least. But me being human, nothing is ever enough. Grass is always greener on the other side. So I decided to leave events and go back into agency life with Grey. That was my excuse at least. But the truth is I felt like every single minute of my life was being sucked out because I had no time for friends and family, went through a few bad patch when it came to relationship, and every day I just worked and worked and worked. That is all there is for me… I desperately wanted my life back.

I took on Grey because it was an awesome portfolio. I learnt a lot from there but as time goes, I realized that the account management team was very weak and I couldn’t progress further, but I was determined to stay till at least the end of the mega launch this August. I wasn’t determined enough obviously! =p

When my spirits was weak, I got a FB message from my first agency Strategic Planner. He asked if I would like to explore being a Strat planner. To be honest, it has never crossed my mind. He interviewed me over a bottle of beer @ Bangsar and walla, I was offered the job. So, I left Grey after 8 months, and joined Publicis under the leadership of Chats – my direct boss and mentor…and here I am today! =)

Today, I have my beloved friends and family supporting me, my fortnightly lepak session with my hommies, my 4 legged friend behaving well, my own laptop to work with, not to mention under the guidance of a a world renowned boss - no experience, no idea what is in store for her, but just as determined and excited……writing another chapter of my life.

Oh did I mentioned along the way, I found a funny man to call a bf *winks*

All About….Hair~

Dec marks the 6^th month of me in Grey Global Business Unit. I am surprised that it has only been 6 months. It seems like I’ve been here for much much longer. To be frank, as much as I complain about work I am genuinely happy working here, but somethings gotta give…..

I have an awesome team working on Pantene account. My producers are the nicest in the industry. My clients are understanding and have heapssss of budget. I get to do lots of production work.( Back in BBDO, I only get to do print because TV productions are “seniors” portfolio – bullshit) I am fortunate to be working alongside with ASEAN Grey counterpart.

Of course I was skeptical at first - from a hip telco account to hair product? Even my mum wasn’t too sure. But skeptical as I am, I took up the position and with that one small step it opened up a window of opportunity for me. I have never seen hair in that light before! I’ve never been the hair-proud type and had always hated the typical hair shampoo ads. Little did I know, it is these typical executions which are the hardest to achieve.

And….

You won’t believe the amount of words the hair industry people use to describe hair. If you think dry and damage is good enough, you are fooling yourself. Clients and agency can sit in a 2 hour long meeting just debating on hair condition. And terms that were used? Try to think along the lines of healthy, shinny, happy and juicy hair – Now you know why I am growing side-ways aight? Because discussing about hair makes me feel hungry!

And that one thing I absolutely love about working here is that they truly practice team work and client-agency partnership to the core. Even just an AE, we are given the opportunity to develop an idea together, clients seek our opinion on decision making, planners appreciates our input. In a simpler term, we have a say in everything…and our opinions matters!

But like I said, some things gotta give….and some opportunity rarely come by and it’s too irresistible to turn down so….with a heavy heart – I’m leaving Grey to embark on a completely new role in advertising =)

This entry comes bearing news. I guess I’m over the whole “I’m seeing someone” phrase la. At least I don’t refer him as “someone” random anymore. That’s a start isn’t it? Yes, I’m dating again….it sounds really weird coming from a 23 a going on 24 years old these days…

Yes, sure there’s a lot to blog about but I ain’t gonna do that and bore the life out of everyone. So I’m going to attempt to list down what I like about him;

He is the “Bro” type and not the “Macha” type – I’ve been thanking God for that.
He plays hide & seek with me in a supermarket – soo fun!
He is slightly taller which makes kissing perfect :x
He cooks!! I eat!! All is good!!
He suggested to change my “pundek” to “silly” – yes there were a debate on how it doesn’t fit into many many contexts and situations like;

- Someone rides a motorcycle right in the middle of your lane

“Oi Silly, move your ass” – NO

- Someone showed you a middle finger on the road

“Fuck you la silly” – NO NO

- Someone flash at you.

“Silly, you do that one more time my heels will go up your ass, you damn silly” NO NO NO

but hey…I found one classic replacement and its “Pusinica”

- Someone rides a motorcycle right in the middle of your lane

“Oi Pusinica, move your ass” – Well…..it’s ok cos pucsinica didn’t go to driving school

- Someone showed you a middle finger on the road

“Here…take this back you pucsinica” – This works too cos it’ll make the guy even more furious when you call him pucsinica.

P/s: FYI – Pusinica is not vulgar – it means either pumpkin or brinjal in Tamil

He uses Dentol sanitizers after each ciggie he takes so I won’t be walking around with an “ash tray” in hand. He also chews on gum on the way back home so I won’t be kissing an ashtray mascot when we say good night.

The date that went wrong

Honestly, I have not been in a proper relationship for the past 2 years – I felt almost like a lesbian. For the past 2 years , I was approached by a female gym instructor which was really odd, went out with this Malay dude for about 3 months or so which I honestly rather not blog about –AND the most recent one – I went out with this Chinese guy! Yes, that’s the first ever Chinese guy I went out with!! **I’m soo proud** the truth is, it actually went pretty well – movie – desert – dinner. But he was quite boring and I wasn’t showing any signs cos I wasn’t interested, but I enjoyed his company and thinks he could be a nice friend until he ruin it. Here’s the last 10 mins of our so-called date went;

Eric.........: Hey Jasmine, do you mind me asking you a personal question ?

Jasmine : Well, you’ve asked quite a number of personal questions, I doubt this would make any difference, so bring it on!

Eric.........: Please don’t take it the wrong way if I sound funny.

Jasmine : Ok…*eye brows raised*

Yes – I have been a very angry person lately. Those who are in my Facebook would testify. Fine! I admit I might have abused that site as my platform to vent my frustration and anger and all that’s inside me but that was the only option I had, given the fact that I can’t scream and shout in the office.

Don’t get me wrong – I love my job! And NO, I did not say it with a heavy heart. It’s true….those who are in advertising would give anything to be part of the regional team. And having the title REGIONAL ACCOUNT – it also means we deal with heaps of people. There’s just one damn Aussie that I would really love to bitch about but I figured he is just not worth my time or space in my blog. He will however get his 5mins worth of fame in Animal News as the person who got himself caught in a kangaroo stampede or get into a really bad Koala fight!! One day….You’ll see!! **Now let’s all pray that God answers prayers*

But in the name of good faith, I’m bearing it. I know I can! I believe in the spirit of team work. So I’m standing tall, despite the screw ups – I’m just not ready to give up yet.
